SCBA

A self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is a respirator worn by the user that supplies a breathable atmosphere that is either carried in or generated by the apparatus and is independent of the ambient atmosphere. Respiratory protection is worn in all atmospheres that are considered to be Immediately dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH).

To operate safely and effectively in hazardous atmospheres, firefighters must be aware of the limitations of their protective breathing apparatus. These limitations include those of the weare, the equipment, and the air supply. For more information about these limitations consult the user's manual provided with the equipment or other documentation and references.
